Update on studying.
On the home straight of the lecture period for the winter semester 2022/23, student services are available again at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE); with regard to registrations for and withdrawals from examinations, applications for semesters abroad, and the email servers, we are on our way back to regular operations. An overview.
‘Ever since the first news of the cyberattack and the resulting restrictions and their ramifications for University operations, the paramount objective was to keep up teaching and learning. The administrative processes relating to examinations and enrolment are still on top of our list of priorities’, explains Prof. Dr. Stefan Rumann, Vice-Rector for Studies, Teaching and Education at UDE. ‘I am aware that the consequences of the attack give rise to worries and maybe even frustration for some students, but I can assure you that we are making good progress and that no student will be left behind’, Prof. Rumann continues.
For instance, the examinations at the end of the winter semester can be conducted as planned and a solution for withdrawals from examinations has also been developed: it has been possible to access HISinOne from within the internal University network since the beginning of January. Thus, it is possible to register for examinations, withdraw from them and download certificates and transcripts of records. Alternatively, emails can be sent to that effect to the person responsible for the relevant course of study at the Examinations Office. They can be contacted again via the usual email addresses (firstname.lastname@example.org) and phone numbers and offer in-person consultation hours.
The server of the Moodle learning platform can also be accessed again from the internal and external networks by anyone who has already reset their password. Students who still need to reset their password can do so on workstations around the ePoints in the libraries. Staff are available to answer questions at the ePoint between 8 am and 4 pm.
Passwords must be changed on campus and in person. Letters authorising third persons to do this cannot be accepted. Individuals who do not remember their password must authenticate themselves by presenting an official identity document. Within the internal network, it is also possible to access LSF – however, in contrast to HISinOne, it can only be viewed in read-only mode.
Students’ email addresses are accessible and functioning again. Instructions are available here.
Students who are planning a stay abroad in Europe in the winter semester 2023/24 or the summer semester 2024 can apply for a place at one of our Erasmus partner universities until 31 January. Applications can be submitted via the University’s outgoings portal; applicants simply need to register using an alternative email address. If you cannot provide individual documents for your application due to the current situation, a fair approach will be applied to accommodate the circumstances. Please find instructions on the application process here.
The application period for master’s courses with admission restrictions for the summer semester 2023 has been extended until 31 January. If you would like to enrol for a course without admission restrictions, you can do so on working days at the Duisburg campus (Geibelstraße 41) and at the Essen campus (Universitätsstraße 2) without prior appointment between 1 and 3 pm on Mondays and between 9 am and 12 noon on Tuesdays to Fridays. Please find all information on applications here.
The ‘Wochen der Studienorientierung’ information weeks on study options will take place throughout North Rhine-Westphalia between 16 January and 3 February. UDE will participate in the form of online presentations intended to help find guidance when selecting a course of study. The ‘Wochen der Studienorientierung’ events are separated into three thematic blocks: from 16 to 20 January the focus will be on information on how to select a course of study, while presentations on courses offered at UDE will be held between 23 and 27 January. From 31 January to 3 February, studies and work in the teaching profession will be specifically looked at. Please find more information here.
If you have any further questions regarding studies at UDE, do not hesitate to contact the Infoline team. The can be reached by phone (+49 203 379 1800 and +49 201 183 4949) or by email (email@example.com) during their service hours (Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm).
